Meet Joel

With A Smartphone + 120 Seconds Of Your Time, We’re Celebrating YOU!

We were pretty excited when we met Joel.

He had very interesting thoughts on style and confidence.  Here’s what he shared with us.

What does style mean to you?

Joel: Style is largely personal. It’s what it means to you. It’s what you’re comfortable in and what resonates with you most. Fashions and trends are dictated to us but style is your interpretation of it.

What speaks most to you?

Joel: Unisex items.  I don’t really believe in gendered clothing.

We love your glasses. Are they a signature accessory for you?

Joel: I just started wearing glasses a few months ago. I thought that if I have to wear them, I might as well go big! They just bring everything else together for me. It brings my style identity together.

What does confidence mean to you?

Joel: I don’t care what other people think really. I find that dressing for me makes me happy. Poeple resonate with those who embrace how they look vs. those who are uncomfortable in their clothing.

It’s strange actually if you don’t believe in yourself. Others might not agree with you, but how to dress or present yourself is up to you. It’s really your own opinion.

I just heard that you make some of your own clothes. What do you like to design and make?

Joel: I like to make kimono inspired jackets a lot of the time and wear them over layers. Similar to what I’m wearing but with big sleeves.

I like to see how garments naturally distress and wear over the course of their life. How seaming frays is interesting. Garments then develop character.

What brings a smile to your face?

Joel: People who don’t care what others think. My favourite blog is Advanced Style– the one with older women.  Any older women that come into the store [Mayfair Shoes] and wants to try on the craziest pair of shoes, makes me happy. When an 80 year old woman tries on these shoes [the ones in his hand], well, that’s awesome.

What words would you use to describe you and what you’re about?

Joel: Independent, creative, abstract.

Wow, right? Joel is part of the @MayfairShoes team.  Go find him and let him sell you fabulous shoes!

Meet Van

With a smartphone + 120 seconds of your time, we’re celebrating YOU!

We got the chance to catch up with Van and hear some of her thoughts on style and confidence.

What does style mean to you?

Van: To me, it’s all about functionality. It’s never about one item or one event. For me, I have to be able to use a particular piece for other parts of my life.

This sweater I have on is for the temperature right now.  But, I also wear it on vacation over a maxi dress.  I always try and use items in more than one way. It saves money.

How do you do more with less in your wardrobe?

Van: Well, I don’t really limit myself.  I like men’s clothes too, so basic tees or hoodies- I see if there’s anything I like there.

It could be a hat or scarf.  Some lines work better for me, especially if it’s a slim cut.

What one item must you have in your wardrobe?

Van: Stretchy jeans! I’m all about comfort. After kids, it’s good to have some stretch.  Your body changes so much after kids.

What does confidence mean to you- especially as a business owner?

Van: I try and keep active.  I have to do something each day that makes me sweat.  Running does that for me.  Just to keep my endorphins moving! I try and do that. Confidence is about movement to me. It’s not about standing still.

If you’re uncomfortable in what you’re wearing when you move, you’re confidence won’t be as high.  People will see it.  They also feel this from you too.

People sense when you’re comfortable and confident in your own skin.

What makes you smile?

Van: Kids. My kids but all kids in general.

Also, the best part of being an entrepreneur is that you get to meet new people and hear their story. That’s important to me.

What words would you use to best describe you and what you’re about?

Van: The very core of me is kindness. Being kind to people is so important.  It’s important to use your skills and your knowledge to do good and make a difference.

I try to be fun!

I think people struggle with work-life balance and for me, it’s so important to stay in the present. That’s my mindset; just to stay right here, right now. We’re all just doing as best as we can. Stay in the present.

Meet Joanna

With a smartphone + 120 seconds of your time, we’re celebrating YOU!

We met up with Joanna.  We love her off duty Mom look (she’s a brand new mom).

What does style mean to you?

Joanna: How somebody portrays and presents themselves overall.  It’s about the whole package: hair, makeup and a great outfit.

Tell us about your style.

Joanna: I always want to look polished and professional- with a bit of added flare.

What’s that one item you can’t live without?

Joanna: Heels.  I love to wear heels. Boots. Pumps. It doesn’t matter.  Wearing heels usually makes me feel confident. They elongate my frame.

You mention confidence.  What does this mean to you?

Joanna: It means being comfortable with yourself. It means being sure of your abilities as well as how you look to others. For me, it also means being comfortable in my own style.

People who have a lot of confidence usually stand out to me. It’s all in the way they present themselves. When people stand up straight or walk with purpose, they just stand out and come across as very confident.

By the way, we love your handbag.  Is that a go-to for you?

Joanna: Yes! This bag is special to me.  I found it on a trip to NYC with my husband.  I can wear it with jeans and a t shirt or really dress it up.

What makes you smile?

Joanna: My baby.  I’m a new mom.  This is been a great journey so far.

Also, just enjoying the simple things in life with my husband- even just going for coffee with him.

I love to travel. Anywhere in Europe is perfect for me.

This is a hard question. What words would you use to describe yourself?

Joanna: This is a tough one.  I would say accomplished – I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot so far.  Confident is a good word to describe me.  Ambitious – this describes me too.

Meet Jennifer Bergman

With a smartphone + 120 seconds of your time, we’re celebrating YOU!

Here we go!

We got a change to catch up with Jenn and ask her a few questions about style and confidence.

What does style mean to you?

Jennifer: To me, style is a visual expression of yourself – of your personality, how you’re feeling and your confidence.

Can you share some thoughts on what your personal style is?

Jennifer: Comfort + style is very important to me.

I don’t want to have to tug at garments or struggle in heels that are too high for me.  I’m a tomboy at heart and I play a lot of sports.  I always have some type of sports injury so I have to be able to walk comfortably, especially for my profession.

As the head of a wedding and design consultancy, I’m usually in a classic, timeless black dress at a client’s wedding. I have to be able to move – all day long. I do like to wear heels or wedges so comfort is very important to me, especially after a 14 hour day on site at one of my weddings.

What’s that one item in your entire wardrobe that you can’t live without?

Jennifer: For fall, my leather jacket is my go-to.  It’s classic and edgy.

Other than that, comfy jeans are a must for me.  I can wear flats or throw on a pair of heels and that works for me.

What does confidence mean to you?

Jennifer: A lot of it is really just knowing yourself and being comfortable in your own skin. I find that as I get older, I know myself better and I don’t really care much what others think.

Confidence comes from within. You can try and fake it but true colours really do shine through so it’s always best to own yourself and own how you are.

What brings a smile to your face?

Jennifer: Sunshine and beautiful days in the river valley.

What words would you use to describe yourself?

Jennifer: Energetic, Poised, Calm, Creative, Adventurous
